David Muir often breaks “chaotic” news to fans on World News Tonight, but during the Oct. 21 episode he delivered news about a growing controversy in Washington, D.C. that could serve as a blow to President Donald Trump.

Muir’s nightly broadcast on ABC recalls the major stories of the day for viewers, with many touching on news out of the nation’s capital, and especially during Trump’s second term as president.

And while David previously shared about an “unprecedented” claim by the president that had an eye-watering monetary sum attached to it that would affect taxpayers, he now shifted focus to news about the White House. Wednesday evening David discussed the reaction to Trump’s demolition of the East Wing that could serve as a blow to his platform.

“We turn now to the growing controversy over the demolition at the White House, and all of this playing out during this government shutdown, on now day 22, with thousands of federal workers losing their jobs,” Muir said as he broke the story.

Muir updated fans on the controversy surrounding the construction of President Trump’s ballroom

“Tonight, sources telling ABC News the entire East Wing is expected to be demolished as soon as this weekend to clear the way for President Trump’s $300 million ballroom,” he continued. “Some Republicans tonight now questioning the optics of this, especially during this shutdown, and now, former First Lady Hillary Clinton saying to the American people, ‘It’s not his house. It’s your house, and he’s destroying it.’”

He then handed the segment off to reporter Mary Bruce, who reminded viewers that Trump had previously sworn when announcing plans to build the massive ballroom that he wouldn’t touch the original structures. The cost has since ballooned up to $300 million.

“But this week, the nation’s capital was taken by surprise when bulldozers and cranes started demolition,” Bruce said.

Demolition has continued on the East Wing during the government shutdown

She then shared history about the wing, which has traditionally served as the home for the First Lady’s offices, before detailing that many are calling on the president to halt the project for the time being.

“The National Trust for Historic Preservation is calling on the administration to pause demolition until plans for the proposed ballroom go through the legally required public review processes,” Bruce said. “They also write they’re deeply concerned the planned 90,000 square foot ballroom, larger than the iconic residence building, will overwhelm the White House itself.”

Though the president has insisted taxpayers are not footing the bill for the construction, Bruce then segued into how the construction’s optics are being received amidst a government shutdown. Thousands of government workers are missing paychecks, others are furloughed or fired, and millions of Americans are “now worried about putting food on the table.”

She also shared that House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the project, calling it the “greatest improvement” to the White House in history and saying it would be “glorious” and “used for everybody.”

She then closed out the story by summarizing the situation and also adding a quote from the president himself.
