The 69-year-old actor took to Instagram to make a tribute post in honor of his wife’s birthday on Sunday, October 26. Tom shared a photo of Rita smiling in a black bathing suit, her wet hair slicked back, after taking a dip in the ocean, which is visible in the background behind her. In the photo, her hands are near her face as if she were running them through her hair, and one wrist is filled with a plethora of bracelets.

Tom and Rita have been married for 37 years, since tying the knot in April 1988. Throughout their marriage, they have welcomed two children: Chester “Chet” Marlon Hanks, 35, and Truman Theodore Hanks, 29.
The Philadelphia star is also a father to Colin Hanks, 47, and Elizabeth Hanks, 43, from his previous marriage to Samantha Lewes.

Tom also celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary with an Instagram post. He posted a selfie of the two of them on vacation by the ocean on April 30. He captioned it, “37 years married. Today! Love you, Mrs. -Mr.THanks.”
Rita made her own post by sharing a photo of the two of them bundled up and huddled together in a pasture. She captioned her post, “Happy 37th Anniversary my love!!!” with various colorful heart emojis.
The pair first met on the set of Bosom Buddies in 1981 and became fast friends. They ended up working together again in 1985’s Volunteers, where they played lovers. Tom and Rita made their first public appearance as a couple at the red carpet premiere of Three Amigos in 1986.

In a 2001 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Tom spoke about his marriage to Rita and what makes their relationship work.

“The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity and our willingness to have an intimate connection. When I married Rita, I thought, ‘This is going to require some change on my part.’ I won’t deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn’t magic — the way it’s shown in movies.”

Over the years, Tom and Rita have expressed their love for each other in interviews and on their social media posts.
In 2012, Rita shared one of the sweetest moments she had with Tom in an interview with Piers Morgan.
“I’ll never forget, we were standing on the corner of 57th and 5th in New York, or 58th and 5th,” the singer said about Tom, per PEOPLE. “We were holding hands, and we were waiting for the traffic light to change.”
